After living a long life of 81 years, Wilbur dies and steps aboard the Midnight Train where he gets to see the most important parts of his life from a ghostly perspective, and he finds himself lacking.

While being wildly successful by opening bookshop after bookshop, he loses all his friends and Maggie, the woman he loved more than anyone else. It took dying for him to see this.

There are rules on the train; never try to interfere, never stick around when your alive self goes to sleep, and get on the train when it comes to collect you from the moment. Wilbur decides to toss the rules out and tries to interfere anyway, hoping to change the life he’d led.

What a treat, to be able to live life twice; once to muddle through and once with the knowledge of what will happen. I’d love this opportunity, personally. I’d love to have Future Me whisper something in my ear that will help me see the path to the most happiness and contentment in life.

The author’s narrative style is so easy to read that I was lost in this book immediately, but had to hold my envy back at not being able to change my own past. Still, I’d read the next book from Matt Haig in a heartbeat.
